- Job Summary

The Senior Legal Counsel Life is responsible for delivering effective and efficient technical support on legal matters in respect of all (re)insurance operations of the Life business unit within the EMEA Hub. She/he will also be expected to deliver support on legal matters in the Asian region, in coordination with local counsels, as needed and as time permits.

 

- Key duties and responsibilities

  • Reinsurance support
    • Provide legal guidance and support in any assigned Life transactional, underwriting and (as required) claims related matters including policy wording queries, drafting and negotiating agreements
    • Support the respective markets of the Life business unit, including identifying and addressing/mitigating legal risks in the business and support the business by appropriately addressing any legal and compliance risk and developing processes to respond to them for the commercial and legal progression of the relevant business.
    • Act as a direct legal point of contact for markets in the EMEA region and give support to the legal team in the Asian markets as needed and as time permits.
    • Providing day to day legal advice, guidance, and support to the Life business unit in relation to any other legal, commercial, claims and financial matters primarily related to the EMEA Hub and its assigned entities.
  • Work together with the respective reinsurance expert on financial solution structures, give legal support to complex reinsurance transactions and the related contractual framework including any collateral structures as well as regulatory legal question related to the transaction.
    • Cooperate and communicate with the Group Compliance Officer, the relevant  Hub General Counsels,  Hub Compliance Officers, relevant legal counsels and other relevant stakeholders, including external counsels/agencies with regard to relevant legal and compliance matters including relevant training activities or specific projects as may be required from time to time.
  • Compliance
    • Advise on business and regulatory compliance-related matters and support the Group Compliance Officer, the SGL Chief Legel Counsel  and the EMEA Hub General Counsel with the implementation of Group, Divisional and local EMEA approved governance and legal compliance policies and provide training on such policies as required.
    • Provide advice, assessment, guidance and support on legal and regulatory compliance and ethical conduct of the SGL business activities of the EMEA Hub including (re)insurance regulatory issues, sanctions and embargoes, anti-money laundering & terrorism financing, anti-bribery, anti-fraud, conflicts of interest, data protection and privacy, anti-trust and competition, reputational risks and ethics.
    • Provide business compliance training, referrals and tools with respect to SGL activities , with a strong focus on data privacy and data protection matters.
  • Corporate
    • Support the Hub General Counsel and Group Corporate Legal Team, as appropriate, with ad hoc legal matters relating to SGL EMEA based entities.
    • Participate in EMEA Hub and Group projects including developing strategy, drafting applicable documents, liaising with both the internal client and external advisors and project managing process;
    • Provide support and advice with respect to the EMEA Hub assigned legal entities and in general legal matters relating to the EMEA Hub.
  • Reporting
    • The Senior Legal Counsel Life reports directly to the EMEA Hub General Counsel.
    • The Senior Legal Counsel Life also has a functional reporting line directly to the SGL Chief Legal Counsel.

 

- Required experience & competencies

Experience:

  • Law degree in a European Jurisdiction
  • Legal experience in Hong Kong or Singapur
  • 5- 10 years legal practice in a reinsurance/insurance and or tech environment
  • Solid knowledge and experience in reinsurance/insurance.

Personal Competencies:

  • Superior written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills in French and English
  • Ability to easily adopt to emerging legal challenges
  • Critical thinking and tactical execution into his/her work
  • Strong capability to engage directly with market teams and others
  • Abilitity to work independently

Digital Competencies:

  • Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office suite

 

- Required Education

Law degree with a sound academic record
