Job Summary


This position is responsible for managing the technical accounting functions related to claims and reserving, which includes managing the daily activities of the Financial Accounting Claims & Reserving Team.  The individual plays a critical role in the quarter close process and is responsible for reviewing quarterly journal entries and reconciliations, as well as performing robust analytics over the responsible areas.  The individual will be required to understand variances to expected results and will provide quarterly packages to senior leadership. 


- Key duties and responsibilities


  • Oversee the calculation, preparation and recording of journal entries on a quarterly basis.
  • Review reconciliations of financial statement accounts as part of the quarterly close.
  • Analyse quarterly results and understand the reason behind variance to expectations, prior periods and budgeted amounts.
  • Produce quarterly reports over losses and reports to senior leadership.
  • Work cross-functionally to understand trends and anomalies in financial data.
  • Identify and implement process improvements.
  • Effectively utilize IT systems and tools to improve the efficiency of the department.
  • Develop policies, procedures, and reporting tools and provide input for continuous improvement of the team and department.
  • Monitor systems and processes to ensure internal controls are in place and effective.
  • Assist external and internal auditor to help understand processes and provide the necessary audit support.
  • Work closely and collaborate with others within Finance, Operations and IT.


- Required experience and Education


  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Accounting or Finance.
  • CPA or equivalent combination of education & experience, preferred.
  • 7+ years of accounting experience, preferably within the financial services industry.
  • Strong organization, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to achieve results by taking a proactive long-term view of business goals and objectives.
  • Strong attention to detail with ability to work effectively in fast paced environment and manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills; proven success communicating effectively at all levels of an organization.
  • Strong presentation skills, with the ability to interface with departmental staff, internal management and other business units.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with individuals at all levels within the Company to maximize performance, creativity, problem solving, and results.
  • Ability to exercise professional judgement and assume responsibility for decisions which have an impact on people and quality of work product.
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software systems.
  • Ability and willingness to work additional hours to meet challenging deadlines even in areas beyond direct responsibility. 
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to motivate & develop staff, preferred.
  • Insurance and/or reinsurance accounting experience and education, preferred.
